I think with this mix I didn’t want to do anything but play serious jazz songs without having to concentrate on the familiarity of a loop or sample and just focus on the rhythms and textures. Besides the obvious ATCQ intro and the uber famous sample later on in the mix that was used for one of the greatest dance floor/club classics ever produced by Pal Joey (see where I’m going here?), I just wanted to play songs that have influenced me over time… some are mp3’s, some are vinyl but they are all classics, and like with jazz… I started with an idea and freestyle’d the mix as I went. No edits, no over dubs, no re-recording… just 1 straight mix all the way through. I also like how the whole mix is instrumental except for the track with Bilal singing. I think it breaks up the groove nicely. Enjoy!
